Dear Friends, On May 16, 2025, something long held in prayer was formally recognized under the law. The DEA granted the first-ever religious exemption for Ayahuasca under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) to the Church of Gaia, a sacred community devoted to healing, ceremony, and spiritual connection through plant medicine. This marks a significant legal milestone: the first successful petition for religious exemption under the DEA’s exemption process, and the official recognition of Gaia’s sincere religious practice under federal law. Terrapin Legal is deeply honored to have supported Gaia through this journey. Every step was taken with intention, considering both the legal terrain and the ceremonial ground beneath it. And somewhere, beyond the paperwork, A door begins to open. Not flung wide, but cracked open — just enough for light to slip in. Enough for those walking this path with care and conviction to see a way through. It’s a reminder that grassroots efforts can create meaningful impact, and that progress is possible when sacred practice and sound intention move together, when persistence and reverence walk side by side. This exemption doesn’t stand alone; it reverberates across a growing entheogenic ecosystem, in which spiritual communities, legal advocates, and practitioners are working to shape an ethical and sustainable path forward. This movement is not carried by any one person or moment. It asks each of us to chip away at the barriers in front of us, using whatever tools we hold, whether those are legal, relational, spiritual, or otherwise. It asks us to show up with our unique gifts and callings, to be of service, and to do so with care, humility, and vision. It’s a rare thing to watch something sacred move through the machinery of the state and emerge intact. But when it does, it reminds us that prayer can take the form of persistence, and that the sacred doesn’t vanish just because the system wasn’t built for it.
